What we did in class
This week, we discuss how heat flows. We talked about the difference between conduction, radiation and convection. We explored how we can heat up a metal spoon by putting it in contact with a variety of heat sources. This is called conduction.
We used a metal spoon because metal is a very good conductor, that means that it heats up quickly and heat can transfer through it easily. We put the spoon on a heat bag and in some hot water. Both times it heated up very quickly and reached the same temperature on the heat sources. Once it left the heat source though, it cooled back down fast. We tried the same investigation with a wooden spoon which is a poor heat conductor, and the wooden spoon only got a little bit warm. Wood is a heat insulator, which means that heat does not flow easily to it. |
