What we did this weekWelcome back for term 2, everybody!
This week we started exploring our new strand of science, that we will be learning about this term - Chemistry. Mrs Marini had a box filled with a bunch of different objects made of different materials. We examined the objects and talked about ways we could change their size, shape or colour. Mrs Marini explained that these changes were called physical changes, because they didn't change the material. For an example, a piece of paper is still paper even if we cut it in half. She showed us a cool trick, where she took a small piece of paper and cut it a special way so that it's size and shape changed. She made the small paper so big that it could fit over 4 students bodies. We explored the physical changes of a balloon and a paddlepop stick. We blew up the balloon and snapped the paddlepop stick. We changed the size and shape of them, but the material they were made of stayed the same. To show us the difference between a physical and a chemical change, Mrs Marini showed us what happens to paper when it is burned by fire. The burning causes a chemical change, and it actually turns the paper into ash! Don't worry, we were perfectly safe. |
